Human communication has come a long way since the cave drawings of our prehistoric ancestors. Increasingly, the favored method of communication for today’s humanoid is constant text exchanges. In fact, over six billion text messages are sent in the U.S. each day, according to a 2012 Forrester report. It can be difficult to communicate clearly via these short bursts of letters, but fortunately we make ourselves understood through the ever-more popular emojis. Moonshine Ink talked to people (in person) to ask, “What is your favorite emoji, and why?”

Mine has to be the heart. I like choosing from all the colors. If I’m talking to someone through Facebook or a text, it’s my way to end the conversation by letting them know I care about them.

My favorite emoji is the one laughing out loud (lol) with the tears. You want people to understand the tone of your text — sometimes it seems too serious, and so it’s a nice way to make something come across more friendly.
