I hope the holidays treated you well. I’m just glad they’re over. I spent most of my time under the woodstove soaking up the heat. It was the only place safe to hide from visiting aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, and nephews. Oh, the nephews. Not even a hot wood-burning stove could keep them from hunting me down. We ended up having to block the stove with chairs to keep curious, tiny hands away. This kept the hands — and me — a little safer. I hope you remember that if things get too intense you can always just lie under the woodstove. It works for me. I’ll be there until spring.
Our mission this month was to visit Scraps Dog Bakery in Truckee and meet a cat from the Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation. The foundation always has a nice feline friend looking for a home. Instead, all we found was resident tabby Pauly. Apparently, the WARF cats have been getting adopted quickly as of late. Great news for cats, but bad news for this feline reporter. I tried talking to Pauly, but he lives in a pet store. This is a cat that has seen it all. He barely acknowledged my existence, looking up only for a moment before returning to his nap. Before we walked out, I looked at Pauly as if I were Arnold Schwarzenegger and said, “I’ll be back.” No, really, I will be back next month to meet a new cat.
At the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe, we met a pair of cats named Pepsi and Sprite. These two bubbly girls came from Glenshire and are now in the market for a new place. Sprite and Pepsi are both about 7 years old. Pepsi is a mellow tortoiseshell that was shy but friendly when we met. It was hard to get her picture, but I think we managed a decent shot. Sprite was a little more adventurous and was happy to pose for the camera.
Both of these lovely ladies lost their homes over the holidays, and are just too pretty and fluffy to be stuck in a cage, even if it’s a pretty nice cage. They belong at the opera or somewhere more sophisticated than our old shelter. Their paperwork says they would be happy in any home, but after speaking to Sprite she indicated that they preferred a lakefront home with a few nice sunny spots. If a lakefront doesn’t work out, she would prefer something with mountain views. They both promised to help keep your lap warm.
Last month’s dog friend Amira has been adopted. My brother Indy the dog ran into her getting new tires before all the snow fell last month. Now Indy and Amira both have new homes and new tires. It’s a good thing because there is nothing worse than a homeless dog driving around on bald tires.
