Did you know the Tahoe Food Hub sources produce from 40 local farms? In addition to produce, they stock meat, eggs, dairy, and more from 40 specialty dealers within 150 miles of Tahoe.

The Tahoe Food Hub’s Farm Shop, located at the bottom of Alpine Meadows, has added a new event to their lineup with the monthly Meet Your Maker event. On the last Friday of every month, the shop will feature a different maker whose product is sold at the Tahoe Food Hub. The event is meant to function as a way of drawing people to the shop while continuing to fulfill the nonprofit’s mission of galvanizing the community to build a regional, sustainable, and equitable food system (see Soup Night).

“It comes down to connecting people with where their food comes from,” said Susie Sutphin, founder and executive director. “We want customers to understand why it takes a community to build a local food system.”

The events will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. and allow customers to come chat, sample, and ask questions to the makers of the products they are purchasing at the Food Hub. Sutphin explained that each month they will try and feature a produce and a specialty product.

The second Meet Your Maker event (the first was a huge success by the way), will take place on Dec. 29 and features The Pasta Queen and Hungry Mother Organics’ aquaponics.

As the event develops Sutphin hopes to bring workshops, films, and music into the program’s repertoire.

“We select items so customers can get everything they need for breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” said Linnea Whitney, Farm Shop manager. “We may not be a big grocery store but we want it to be a one-stop-shop so customers can feel good about what they are buying for their family and know where their food comes from.”
