The temporary metropolis that is Black Rock City beckons to hearty folks of wide-ranging ilk. More than just people who clog I-80 with their white, dust-covered cars, Burning Man residents come to their city for individualized reasons, though many are shared — community, dancing, partying, ceremony, crazy clothes, art, biking. To share a taste of the playa, we asked a few Black Rock City residents one simple question: Why did you come to Burning Man this year?

Amanda: If I didn’t come, I’d be devastated … Burning is better than Jenny Craig.
