Truckee Fire Protection District’s Board of Directors approved a contract with Mountain F. Enterprises Inc. at its July 21 meeting to move forward with the Central Truckee Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Phase 2 Forest Management Project, a large-scale effort to restore forest health and reduce hazardous fuels in forested areas above Meadow Park, near Gateway and the Safeway shopping center, extending north toward Coyote Moon Golf Course, east toward Trout Creek, and west toward Northwoods Boulevard. Work will be visible from Donner Pass Road and nearby neighborhoods at times as it progresses. Forestry operations are expected to begin in August.

The project is designed to create a healthier, more resilient forest while reducing the risk, intensity and severity of catastrophic wildfire. Work will also strengthen defensible space around nearby homes and properties and improve emergency access and evacuation routes for residents.

The project area has experienced multiple fire starts in recent years, including a 2024 fire that required air tanker retardant drops after it spotted roughly half a mile over Coyote Moon Golf Course, and a fire this spring that required mutual aid resources to quickly contain.

Phase 2 builds on the approximately 75-acre Phase 1 effort completed in November 2025, which focused on shaded fuel breaks and hazardous vegetation removal around Tahoe Forest Health System, Town of Truckee, Nevada County, and Sierra College properties. Phase 2 expands the project across a broader area, treating approximately 269 acres of forested land and connecting fuel reduction work to better protect nearby neighborhoods and evacuation routes.

TFPD will host a virtual community information meeting at 4 p.m. on Aug. 4. Residents can register for the meeting and find additional project details at truckeefire.org/projects.
