Huge “Save the Forest Service” and “Workers Over Billionaires” banners hung on the Truckee Way I-80 overpass on May 1 as local pro-democracy groups, including Tahoe Truckee Indivisible and Tahoe Tomorrow, observed the national May Day Strong 2026 day of action.

On the heels of the No Kings 3 event and continuing efforts of indivisible chapters across the country as well as other allied pro-democracy groups, the bannering aimed to draw attention to assaults on the U.S. economy and environment by oligarchs and the national administration.

“This was one of thousands of May Day Strong actions across the nation to continue to publicize the failures of the Trump administration to address the needs of our communities and our public lands,” said Tahoe Tomorrow’s Cyan Samone.

The Tahoe/Truckee groups included a “Save the Forest Service” banner because the administration announced plans on March 31 to reorganize and cut staff of the U.S. Forest Service, which manages and protects 197 million acres of the country’s national forests.

“This is an attempt to decimate the effectiveness of the Forest Service and hollow out its world class forest research program,” said Tahoe Truckee Indivisible Co-Lead Anne Kallus. 

The groups plan to hold more protest actions and community gatherings, and they encourage community members to call or email their members of Congress, Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff and Rep. Kevin Kiley, to urge them to use the “power of the purse” to defeat the proposed Forest Service reorganization.
