    Tahoe Titans Road to Recovery

      TRUCKEE

      Two of the victims from the Feb. 7 vehicle ramming of pedestrians in front of Safeway are still undergoing MRIs to determine the extent of their injuries. One is the mother of a Tahoe Titan and the other a 7-year-old boy. The three other boys hit by the vehicle have just a few bumps and bruises according to Truckee Little League President Bree Waters. 

      Assailant Jonathan Maurer, 49, is being held without bail. Waters said the Tahoe Titans team owes a lot of credit to the Truckee Police Department, which had Maurer’s charges increased to eight counts of attempted murder. According to the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office, Maurer is also charged with multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and several sentencing enhancements, including allegations of great bodily injury and prior criminal history. Maurer had his first hearing on Feb. 10.

      “The allegations that this act was intentional and directed at kids is hard to comprehend,” said District Attorney for Nevada County Jesse Wilson. “Our office will work through the criminal justice process and, if the evidence supports the charges, do everything we can, to the fullest extent of the law, to hold this individual accountable, send a clear message that this behavior has no place in society, and protect the public from further harm.”

      The office also said the incident caused deep harm not only to those who were physically injured, but also to their families and to the broader Truckee community. Waters’ GoFundMe will go toward the continued medical treatment of the victims.

      As for the Tahoe Titans, the youth baseball team still plans on attending the Cooperstown All-Star Village they had been fundraising for prior to the incident. The trip will inaugurate the Tahoe Titans as the first travel ball team in Truckee. 

      According to Waters, community members have reached out to make sure the boys get to Cooperstown. The Tahoe Titans also received support and sportsmanship from several of the Reno Muckdogs teams, which prepared gift baskets for the boys and the injured.
