CALIFORNIA DISTRICT 3

On Feb. 5, Rep. Kevin Kiley announced he will not be running for California’s 3rd District. As the March 4 state and federal candidate filing deadline approaches, he still has a district decision to make.

Kiley is the representative for California’s Congressional District 3 as it currently stands, but Proposition 50 will split the district, which includes Tahoe/Truckee, in six directions for the 2026 Midterm elections. 

“My decision not to run in the new District 3 — having previously ruled out the new districts 1, 4, and 7 — was an especially difficult one,” Kiley said in a post on X. “This new district includes many communities in Placer and Sacramento counties that I have represented for 9 years during my time in the Legislature and the House, some of the very best places in California.”

Tahoe/Truckee will remain in the newly drawn District 3. See a redistricted map in Moonshine’s previous reporting here. This narrows Kiley’s decision down to the new districts 5 and 6, which encompass areas previously represented by Kiley. District 5 will contain most of his current district, minus its northern half. District 6 covers the Roseville, Rocklin, Orangevale, and northern Sacramento areas.  

“Over the coming weeks leading up to the March 4 filing deadline,” Kiley said, “I will be talking with constituents and folks throughout the state about the best path forward, and I would love to hear from you.”

Congressional District 6 Rep. Ami Bera is running for California District 3 and released a statement in response to Kiley, expressing his excitement to represent Tahoe/Truckee.
