Keep Truckee Green announced a new community food waste drop-off site in Truckee, making it easier to compost food scraps and support local sustainability efforts.

The new drop-off dumpster is located at the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office at 10879 Donner Pass Rd. next to the existing cardboard drop-off bin. This new site replaces the previous location near Mountain Hardware on Donner Pass Road, which faced recurring challenges related to space constraints and contamination.

This drop-off dumpster is exclusively for food waste. It is critical that “compostable” plastics, yard waste, or paper products are kept out of the food waste dumpster. Although grocery store produce bags provided across the state are now “compostable,” they are not accepted in the food waste collection program. When items other than food waste are placed in these food waste dumpsters, the entire contents of the food waste dumpster are sent to landfill instead of compost.

Two additional community food waste drop-off sites are available, located at Truckee Town Hall and Glenshire General Store.

Food scraps collected at these drop-off sites are processed by Full Circle Soils and Compost in Carson City where they are turned into high-quality compost. Composting food waste instead of sending it to a landfill reduces emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.
