How many people can say they’ve raced a camel? How about an ostrich? That elite group of camel and ostrich racers got a little bigger after the 54th Camel Races in Virginia City Sept. 6 to 8. Thousands of people gathered in the historic mining town to watch jockeys, novice and experienced, race around the track on the backs of camels, ostriches, and even zebras. Our designer, Lauren Shearer, boldly went where no Moonshiner has gone before — behind a hump, clinging onto camel fur, and using her heels to race her trusty steed to victory.
