Pack a Picnic

THE BEST BURRandWICHES AROUND

It’s summer, so you’re headed to the beach you’ve been dying to sun-lizard yourself at, or up to that scenic vantage point you’ve been aching to hike. You grab your backpack and water bottle (dehydration is a real buzzkill). When you get there, you’re stoked, and you’re starving. But the chips you packed have crunched to bits and that salsa leaked all over your microfiber towel. Gosh-diggity-dangit! Shoulda packed a burrandwich. And what is this, you say?

Burritos and sandwiches — hence the burrandwich — are proven to be by far the best hike, bike, and beach friendly portable foods by Tahoe experts everywhere, or maybe just by Moonshine staffers. In any case, we’ve created a handy list of the best places to grab ’em and go.

BURRITOS

La Mexicana, Kings Beach: Big burritos in true Mexican form come out of this cute little part-grocery-part-café joint. Ask them to wrap it in tinfoil, though, as it will be more travel and environmentally friendly than the standard Styrofoam box.

The Burrito Window, Kings Beach: It’s a burrito with Mexi-Cali flair. Think tangy coleslaw, cheesy beans and rice, and a hefty dose of meat or veggies. They wrap them in tinfoil and place in a small paper bag, for easy transport.

Tacos Jalisco, Truckee: On a budget? You can grab either the bean and cheese or bean, rice, and cheese burrito here for just about five bucks. There are lots of other offerings, too, and this busy spot is well-regarded for great seasonings and sauces.

The Dam Café, Tahoe City: Try the breakfast burrito, which adds a little extra protein to your meal with the inclusion of eggs. A Yelp user suggested this hack: Order the veggie breakfast burrito and add bacon.

Lupita’s, Incline Village: According to sports editor Sage, the chimichanga is incredible, and we believe it — because how can you go wrong with a deep fried burrito? It packs all the good punches of a burrito: big, saucy, delicious. For a late afternoon kick, check out their cazuela bowls.

SANDWICHES

Full Belly Deli, Truckee: A ton of offerings allow you to create your own sandwich on your choice of bread, or pick from the menu. They’re big, they’re tasty, and they’re fresh. They’ve got classics like the Reuben or cheesesteak, pressed sandwiches like the tuna melt, and subs too. Staff favorite — the Dirka-Dirka.

West Shore Market, Homewood: Think of these as “craft-sandwiches” utilizing fancy ingredients like fresh pesto, basil-lime aioli, jalapeno slaw, blue cheese horseradish, and caramelized onions.

Tahoe Central Market, Kings Beach: Create it to your heart’s delight! A paper pad of tons of fixings and breads allows you to easily check off all the boxes for your perfect sandwich. There are lots of toppings, meats, and cheeses to choose from.

Mountain High Sandwich Co., Incline Village: Focusing on “conscious food,” this place has many healthy and fresh options, as well as gluten-free bread and vegan offerings. Pick a pre-designed or create your own, choosing from a ton of vegan or organic proteins like house-smoked tofu or house-smoked tri-tip.

Uncommon Kitchen at New Moon, Tahoe City: House-made bread helps these sandwiches shine, as well as fresh, organic ingredients and vegetarian options. But, for the meat eaters, we recommend the Muffaletta, a take on the true New Orleans fave.
