A Spiritual Place, A Creative Space

A friend of mine recently called me a “creativity junky,” which suggests an addiction to being creative. On the contrary, I believe that using my creativity grants me a reprieve from my addictions, and gives me the opportunity to find innovative and inspirational responses to life. Instead of running from chaos, I use my creativity as a compass to help me navigate its storms. Being creative connects me both to my innate creative power – my Self – and to my higher power, my Creator. For me, creativity is a spiritual practice. It is one of the most important aspects of my existence.

The Life and Times of Longboard Ski Racing

This passion/legend/sport has a lifespan directly proportional to the length of the skis – that is, it seems to go on forever. Longboarding first became popular at the peak of the 1850s gold rush when local mining communities with names indicative to the lifestyle lead at the times (Poker Flat, Whiskey Diggings, and Porte Wine to name a few) were looking for an activity to help them while away the long Sierra winters. They say necessity is the mother of all invention and so, with few women in sight, a new activity was born: downhill ski racing.

Designer Dogs and Social Responsibility

Dozens of Chihuahuas, Cockers, and Yorkshire Terriers languished in small, five-by-five wire enclosures. Day after day they paced their meager patch of dirt or sat atop ramshackle plywood doghouses to look forlornly at a world denied to them. They would never play fetch, feel the wind in their face on a car ride, or snuggle with a family member next to a warm fire. Your daughter has a small party and four girls drive up at the same time in four separate cars. Later they all have to hustle, in their respective cars, to make it back home by 11 p.m. On another day you arrive at the end of your sons’ soccer game. One son gets in the car with you, the other gets in his car and follows you home. What is going on here? People being stupid? Gas being wasted? Well yes, but it is also just kids obeying the law.

Reno says yes to "no kill"

The word “murder” is so unpleasant, that when it comes to the approximate 12 million healthy cats and dogs being snuffed out every year, society has a convenient euphemism for the act: euthanasia. Because there is something so fundamentally wrong with this, cities around the country are trying desperately to go “no kill” and stop the madness. Reno is joining the cause, saying yes to “no kill” with the Nevada Humane Society (NHS) taking the lead.

A Better Idea

The south bank of the Truckee River is not part of the transportation corridor. It has only spotty development. Large swaths are open and have spectacular views to the Carson and Sierra Nevada ranges. Open for hiking, angling, bird watching (especially raptors), trail running and even just walking the dog. So, let’s choose not to pave it! Let’s not put a paved trail on the south side of the Truckee River.

Want to Keep the Stars Shining Brighter in Truckee?

Recently there has been a lot of buzz about the Truckee River trail (aka the Legacy Trail) and what its purpose should be: Is it a nature trail providing unique access to the Truckee River? Or is it the alternative transportation route that finally gives residents in Truckee’s largest full time neighborhood, Glenshire, a way to get safely to downtown and beyond? To the Truckee Trails Foundation, the answer seems clear: Truckee needs a paved Truckee River trail, preferably with a parallel single track or unpaved shoulders, stretching from Glenshire all the way to Donner Lake.

Newton Scratches His Head

Based on the statistics, what is the current status of the Tahoe-Truckee Real Estate Market? The number of sales for the entire region has dropped dramatically from 1,216 to 722 in the past two years. We see locals moving to Reno or other places “off the hill” because they can’t afford to buy a house here. Price reductions are the order of the day and some sellers are offering bonuses to real estate offices to sell their properties. Realtors all over the region are trying to figure out what else to do to attract buyers.

Fighting the Good Fight for the American Dream

Home prices in the Tahoe Truckee area are essentially out of reach for the ‘normal’ working family, leaving the classic American Dream a seemingly impossible one. Yet, here is the story of a Latino family who made a life here and had the dream of owning a house. Although they are not yet American citizens, with effort, dedication and hard work, they made their dream come true.

Run Away to the Runway Cafe

Java Jabber
Construction workers, damp and bedraggled, found their way in to the café and helped themselves to some hot coffee. They sat at a table clutching their cups, allowing the steam to thaw out their faces, and stared into space. It is a decidedly different scene than the one on a summer afternoon when I ate a delicious turkey sandwich at a picnic table outside, planes landing and taking off every few minutes, people enjoying their lunch breaks in the sunshine and groups of pilots re-fueling for their next flights.

The Sierra Front Recreation Coalition

The spectacular natural resources and endless recreational opportunities enjoyed by those of us who live in and visit the central Sierra region are what brought us here, and keep bringing us back. And yet, there remains a critical disconnect between the forces which continue to attract more and more people to the area and the funding sources needed to maintain, expand and connect the recreational areas to which people are drawn.

However, Java Sushi recently reorganized its management, brought in fresh menus, some nice dishware, a few new rolls, and most importantly, renewed attention to quality of fish and food presentation. "I just want to say"

Two summers ago, I went to Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day in Meeks Bay. As I approached the event grounds, a voice stopped me in my tracks. It was enveloping and soothing, carried on crystalline sound that emanated from a makeshift stage next to Lake Tahoe’s shore. I stood, transfixed, as the small woman with dreads finished her set.

Practical Wellness
It’s hard to know if a particular food is helping you meet the recommended three servings of whole grains per day when manufacturers aren’t required to tell you how much whole grain is in a product. So it’s up to the consumer to learn what “whole grain” really means and how to decipher the often misleading uses of the words “multi-grain,” “whole grain blend,” and “wheat.”

Nervous about Coal this Christmas

People are nervous about Truckee’s electricity. The Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD) is nervous because as of 2009, the district isn’t sure from where the bulk of its power will be coming. Many ratepayers and several out-of-area voices are nervous because the district is considering alleviating the unknown by signing a 50-year contract for coal-fired power from a Utah company.
