Per the insightful results of research conducted through the bar chatter of  20-somethings, I have found the trend of making a new year’s resolution is falling out of vogue. I don’t know if it is because my generation is getting older and in turn more cynical, or if the idea is simply becoming archaic. Regardless, I am here to positively preach for the resolution tradition to become cool again.

And what better way to start a resolution, be it a little late, than a Mark Estee vision board workshop at Visionary Reno. For those of you who rolled your eyes at the mention of a vision board, please, hear me out.

Creating a vision board uses, you guessed it, visualization — a powerful mental exercise that dates back to Aristotle’s three pillars of success. Basically, the idea is that you picture something happening and that act of visualization makes your desire more likely to happen.

Enter the vision board. Creating a vision board and placing it somewhere you visit every day, if not multiple times a day, forces your brain to participate in short visualization exercises.

As the only space in the country fully dedicated to vision boards, Visionary Reno helps attendees harness their dreams by supplying all the materials needed to build a vision board: think magazines, scissors, glue, and boards. However, remember to bring your own family photos if you want to add a personal touch to your board. To spark inspiration, facilitators invite local speakers to come and talk at the start of the workshop and then invite participants to get creative.

On Jan. 25 Mark Estee will visit the workshop to speak on the idea of overcoming roadblocks.

Perhaps you have heard of Estee; he is a community leader and nationally recognized chef who passionately adores the Reno/Tahoe area. But, his success has not been without challenges and through his presentation at Visionary Reno, Estee will speak to overcoming those roadblocks.

Kathy Griffin, manager at Visionary Reno, explained that at his workshop last year Estee told his life story and spoke of overcoming his many business failures. After his talk Estee will mingle with the participants while they create their vision boards.
