INFO: $1,250 plus cost of board ~$1000, Tahoe Maritime Center: Museum and Gardens, 725 Granlibakken Rd., Tahoe City, (530) 582-9283

In just seven days you can build a seaworthy paddleboard through a Tahoe Maritime Museum course taught by Larry Froley, Roseville-based certified instructor with a background in surfing and paddling.

The course walks participants, who can be as young as 15 (with adult supervision through 18, of course), through the building of a Chesapeake Light Craft paddleboard, specifically their Kaholo board. This board is unique because it has the rare quality of being fast enough to race and stable enough for first-timers. The costs of all materials, including lunch and morning coffee, is included in the cost of the program and a discount is provided for museum members.

Last year’s course was attended by five participants and utilized Granlibakken’s shop space. Danielle Rynning, museum educator at the Tahoe Maritime Museum, explained that more than just paddleboards are built from this course, which fosters a team atmosphere where participants want to meet up use their new boards together.

“Of course it was valuable to come home with a board that I’m now looking forward to using,” Scott Ruck, a 2017 participant said. “But most valuable was the camaraderie with the classmates that developed throughout the week, and the ongoing relationships. That I did not expect!”

And, it doesn’t hurt to have an experienced instructor to help with the inevitable mishaps.

“I think having the group and of course the highly rated instructor there to help through the tough areas of construction was the most valuable. It was very helpful to have someone to help you at critical points and Larry to give us his extensive experience so we didn’t really screw things up,” David Kessler, another 2017 participant said.

Most uniquely, once the board is almost fully assembled, you are able to customize it with different fabric and storage options.

Looking to make this a family affair? More than one person can sign up to build a singular board for an addition $350 a person. Just be wary of who gets dibs on the board when the lake is glassy in the summer.
