It’s one thing to tell a story; it’s a completely different thing to tell someone else’s story while pretending you are them. To top things off, the person whose story you are telling is a historical figure that you probably never met, and only by the power of research are you not only expected to tell their story, but answer questions from captive audience members with words that person would’ve used. I don’t care if you are five or 50, how doesn’t Chautauqua sound completely amazing?
For one night only, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival stage is being turned over to none other than Julia Child and Babe Ruth.
Well, it’s really being turned over to husband and wife team Karen Vuranch and Gene Worthington, two actors specializing in bringing history to life. The full scoop for an evening of Chautauqua usually involves the actor assuming the role of said historical figure, giving a monologue as them, taking questions as that person, and finally breaking character to talk as themselves about the impact the figure has had on history as well as contemporary society.
Even if it’s only for one night, venture over to breathtaking Sand Harbor on Aug. 19 for the Chautauqua. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
