Get Scuba Certified on Lake Tahoe
Take advantage of the deep blue primetime by earning your Open Water Dive Certification with local PADI-certified dive instructors Wendy Wood and Robert Gary Spohr. Course includes two classroom sessions, two pool sessions, and two days of open water diving in Sand Harbor. $453 includes all books, materials, and equipment rental. Ladies Mountain Bike Race at Northstar

The Tahoe LUNA Chix are hosting a ladies cross-country mountain bike race in conjunction with the Northstar Mountain Bike Race Series. Racers can choose from three categories: beginner, novice, or expert. Entry fee is $15 with proceeds from female entrants benefitting the Breast Cancer Fund. Registration is from 5 to 5:45 p.m. and the race begins at 6 p.m. sharp. Donner Summit Bike Time Trial

Got the gusto to challenge a local cycling testpiece? Register for the second annual Donner Summit Bike Time Trial hosted by the Auburn Ski Club’s Junior Nordic Team. The three-mile time trial race climbs Old Highway 40 from the west end of Donner Lake to the Sugar Bowl Academy — an uphill punch of 1,200 feet. Fun Run for Littles at Royal Gorge

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County and North Lake Tahoe will host the inaugural Fun Run for Littles at Royal Gorge at 10 a.m. Runners and walkers can take on either a 5K or a 1-mile course laid out on the beautiful, groomed trails at Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort in Soda Springs. A post-race barbecue at Ice Lakes Lodge will follow. Children are welcome and all participants are encouraged to collect pledges either online or in person prior to race day. Registration is $25 in advance or $30 day of for adults and $15 for kids under 12. All proceeds support mentoring in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee region. TGR ‘Deeper’ Snowboard Film World Premiere

Teton Gravity Research and local pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones will debut “Deeper,” a new freeride snowboard film, at a world premiere party at the Truckee River Amphitheater. The shred flick was filmed without the use of helicopters or snowmobiles and features cutting edge backcountry snowboarding from riders such as Jones, Travis Rice, Xavier Delerue, Ryland Bell, and Tom Burt. Don’t miss this big screen opportunity to witness the world’s best big mountain snowboarders attack insane natural terrain in California, Utah, Alaska, the Alps, and Antarctica. Flume Trail Mountain Bike Race

Mountain bike racing returns to Lake Tahoe’s famous Flume Trail on Sunday, Sept. 12. The 18-mile race course commits riders to over 3,100 feet of climbing at an elevation above 7,000 feet. The event is presented by the Reno Wheelmen and sanctioned by USA Cycling. It’s the final race in the Nevada Cup State Championship Series, a four-race points series to determine the Nevada State Mountain Bike Champions. There will be age and ability categories for all levels of rider. Registration is limited to 200 racers and the cost is $40 or $30 for junior categories. Event proceeds support the volunteer backcountry patrol in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. There will be no race day registration. Info: renowheelmen.org; BikeReg.com
Disc Golf, Mountain Biking, and Paintball at Squaw Valley
Squaw Valley USA has upped their ante as a summer adventure destination with the opening of a disc golf course, a mountain bike park, and a paintball facility all at High Camp. The new 18-hole, mountain-top disc golf course which is rumored to be championship caliber, includes one par-four hole featuring an 1,080-foot downhill drop. Disc golfers need to buy a Cable Car ticket but the course is free and open through September 6. The mountain bike park offers riders cross-country and downhill trails, including singletrack that drops 2,000 feet over nearly four miles as it plummets to the Village. Trails are open Friday to Sunday from 10:40 a.m. to 6:40 p.m. through August 21 and 10:40 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Sept 19. A daily bike park pass is $39 and includes unlimited Cable Car rides. Paintball fun can be found at two High Camp facilities, a “Woodsball” arena that features natural terrain and a “Speedball” arena composed of artificial obstacles. Paintball is open noon to 5 p.m. and participants must be at least 10 years old. Cost for one hour of play, equipment rental, and Cable Car ride is $45 for adults, $40 for youth 13 to 18, $30 for children 10 to 12 and $40 for seniors 65 to 75.
