Painting: Oil Landscapes In The Studio

Thursdays, March 18 to April 22
Learn plein-air techniques in-studio for the upcoming outdoor season. Working from references, learn the art of crafting a small color sketch (pochade) in oils and how a limited palette enhances color harmony and simplifies mixing. Increase your painting speed by blocking in and mixing color quickly to produce three sketches per class. This class is for students who have experience with mixing color or beginning painting. Author of “The Kite Runner” Speaks at Squaw Valley

Squaw Valley Institute presents “An Evening with Khaled Hosseini,” bestselling author of “The Kite Runner” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns.” Hosseini will discuss his time in Afghanistan, the inspiration for his best-selling novels, working with the United Nation’s Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the work of his foundation, the Khaled Hosseini Foundation, in Afghanistan. Join Hosseini Saturday, April 10, at the Resort at Squaw Creek. Doors open at 6 p.m.,  program begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the event are $45 for SVI members, $50 for nonmembers in advance, $75 for front row seating. District Seeks Commission
Through Friday March 26
The Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District is seeking applicants for the creation of a Public Art Commission, which will be dedicated to the presentation of public art at various Recreation and Park facilities, including the new Community Recreation Center. General functions will include selecting sites, selecting artists, overseeing projects, developing programs, and establishing criteria and an exhibit schedule for the new Truckee Donner Community Recreation Center. The commission will be composed of seven members, appointed by the TDRPD Board of Directors. Commission members must reside within the TDRPD district. The district boundaries are Donner Summit (not including Serene Lakes), Floriston, Russell Valley, Martis Valley to the Northstar-at-Tahoe border, and includes the entire town of Truckee. Summer Festivals Announce Initial Lineups
Celebrating 20 years of music making, the High Sierra Music Festival has announced an initial lineup for the July 1 to 4 festival taking place in Quincy, Calif. Headliners include The Avett Brothers, Ozomatli, Femi Kuti and Positive Force, Railroad Earth, Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Dr. Dog, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Cornmeal, and many more. After a successful outing, the Wanderlust yoga retreat and music festival is once again descending upon Squaw Valley from July 29 to August 1. Call for Artists

Vocalists, choirs, sculptors, and other visual and performing artists are invited to submit work samples for Trails and Vistas, an art hike that will take place in September 2010 in the Sierra Nevada. A stipend is provided for chosen performers and artists; lodging assistance may also be available. The Trails and Vistas annual art hike is in its seventh year. Participating artists have included: choreographer and stage artists Alain Gauthier from Cirque du Soleil; dancer Christopher Childers; storyteller Chief Red Hawk; local poet and artist Cathee Van Rossem St. Clair; local artist Nancy Tieken Lopez; and choreographer Elizabeth Archer and dancers from InnerRhythms. Led by passionate guides, the hike lasts 2.5 hours and is offered 23 times over one weekend. There will be eight to 10 installations and performances along the guided trail.
