When disbelievers demand proof that hip hop is not just booze, bling, and bitches, a track from Lyrics Born is the one to play. His lyrics won’t make mom and pop blush — they just make you want to rhyme along while his beats make you and the dance floor shake all night long.
Lyrics Born is offering fans a treat when he comes through Tahoe, the chance to sample his latest album, “As U Were,” before it drops later this year. The Crystal Bay Club will host the San Francisco–based MC and his live band the Lyrics Born Re-view, featuring his wife, Joyo Velarde, on back-up vocals, singer Constance Lopez, and DJ D Sharp.
New tracks include “Oh Baby,” a driven, verse-spitting track that is guaranteed to create a frenzy on the dance floor. He slows it down a notch with “Pushed Aside, Pulled Apart,” a smooth track featuring Lateef the Truthspeaker that will let you catch your breath but keep you moving. “Funky Hit Records” lives up to its name, bringing a funk flavor to Lyrics Born’s hip hop style.
On Lyrics Born’s 2008 album, “Everywhere at Once,” he stepped away from samples and brought his live band into the studio. We’re thinking that was a good move, considering they help him sell out roughly 150 shows a year.
“I came up in a tradition where you made records, then you toured,” he says on his website. “I like seeing people having a good time. That’s how I feel like I’m moving forward, that things are in motion. I’m a performer — it’s part of who I am.”
Expect the same at the Crystal Bay Club, and keep an ear out for Velarde, who just released her first album, “Love and Understanding.”
