Hot Spot: Mad Hatters for Haiti
March 24, Bar of America
Published: March 11, 2010
Brenda Zimmerman had lived in Tahoe for 10 years before the aftershocks of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12 rippled through her life two days later.
“My roommate was watching the news and said, let’s go to Haiti. I said okay,” Zimmerman says.
Her friend Sam Bloch called two weeks later, asking her to run the logistics for GrassRoots United, a nonprofit established in January. Zimmerman jumped at the chance, and was on a plane to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, five days later. With the help of a friend’s Cessna 210, Zimmerman and GrassRoots United have been flying volunteer teams and supplies to Haiti to contribute to the recovery effort. Volunteers have been instrumental in setting up tent hospitals around the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.
While Zimmerman doesn’t expect all of Tahoe to follow in her footsteps, she invites everyone to a benefit for GrassRoots United at Bar of America on March 24.
Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 9 p.m., and there will be live music from Horsemouth starting at 9:30 p.m. The bar staff will donate tips, and 10 percent of total sales that night will go to GrassRoots United. Raffle tickets will be sold from 6 p.m., with prizes from local businesses and ski resorts. You must be present to win.
The bar staff will be dressed in their best “Mad Hatters” costumes, inspired by “Alice in Wonderland,” and invite everyone to come in their wackiest headgear.
$10 suggested donation, Bar of America, 10096 Donner Pass Road, Truckee, (530) 587-4694, barofamerica.net
