Silver Belt Banzai at Sugar Bowl
March 13 to 14
The Silver Belt Banzai is a unique race blending the excitement of skicross/boardercross action with the tradition of a downhill race. Starting atop Sugar Bowl’s famed Silver Belt run, skiers and riders will race out of the gate in six-man heats with the simple rules of staying on course and finishing in the top two to advance. The event is open to both men and women skiers and riders aged 14 or older. Qualifying heats will be run on Saturday March 13, with winners earning a spot in Sunday’s final races and a chance for cash prizes. Go Lil’ or Go Home at Diamond Peak
Saturday March 20
Kids ages 10 and under have a chance to catch big air off a little jump at the Diamond Peak Go Lil’ or Go Home Festival. The event features a contest on a three-foot-tall jump built at the bottom of the Lodgepole chairlift. Registration will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the competition will start at 11 a.m. The entry fee is $10 and contestants will receive a T-shirt, certificate of achievement, and a photo of his or her jump. U.S. Freestyle Championships at Squaw
March 26 to 28
Squaw Valley is set to host the nation’s top mogul, aerial, and halfpipe skiers for the 2010 Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships. Those who couldn’t make it up to the Olympics in Vancouver will have the opportunity to witness some of the world’s best skiers in action on the local slopes. In addition to world-class competitions, there will be on- and off-hill entertainment for all to enjoy including a Friday night party on the KT-22 Sundeck, a live hip hop pool party at High Camp, and a Saturday night concert at the Olympic Village Lodge. Billy Dutton Uphill
Monday April 12
Some of the region’s fittest skiers and runners will take on Squaw Valley’s Mountain Run during the 21st annual Billy Dutton Uphill race on April 12. The 3.2-mile race course climbs 2,000 feet from the base of KT-22 to High Camp. Racers can compete in skating, diagonal stride, or snowshoe divisions with prizes for all age categories. Skiing For Schools Discounted Lift Tickets
Support the Excellence in Education foundation and get a great deal on a lift ticket at one of four Skiing For Schools events still on the calendar. Spring dates include: Saturday March 20 at Sugar Bowl; Sunday March 21 at Homewood Mountain Resort; Sunday April 11 at Squaw Valley; and Sunday April 18 at Alpine Meadows. Lift tickets are $25 and available the week before on a first come, first serve basis at Porters locations in Truckee and Tahoe City. Tickets for the Homewood and Alpine Meadows ski days will also be available at the resort ticket booths the day of.
North Tahoe Regional Park Ski Trails
A well-kept secret even among longtime local residents, the North Tahoe Public Utility District maintains groomed cross-country ski trails within the 124-acre North Tahoe Regional Park. Perfect for a fun outing with friends and family, the trails are groomed a couple times a week as snow conditions allow. Entry to the North Tahoe Regional Park is free for North Tahoe Public Utility District residents with their resident’s sticker while non-residents pay only a $3 parking fee. The North Tahoe Regional Park is located about one mile west of Highway 267 and one mile north of Highway 28 in Tahoe Vista. Ski rentals are not available on-site but are available in Tahoe City and Kings Beach. Additional donations to support grooming and other park maintenance are appreciated. Look for a fee collection box at the trailhead in the upper parking lot.
