Good Golly Miss Molly

What a busy month for a dog. I attended the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe’s Black Tie and Tails fundraiser and had a great time gallivanting around the Ritz-Carlton. We had delicious food, met great people, and hung out with some cool four-legged friends. I am already looking forward to next year. This month was also exciting because I got to ski with my family. I’ve had knee troubles for about a year now and it was good to get in some powder turns. I could barely walk the next day, but it was worth it.
A few days later I hobbled into the car and visited some of my friends on Lake Tahoe’s North Shore. Tucked near the entrance to Tahoe Vista Park is a small shelter run by Placer County Animal Services. I’m always looking for new friends so I decided to check the place out. I was greeted at the front desk by Georgia, a handsome, female pit bull mix. We told Georgia we wanted to go for a walk with someone special and she introduced us to Molly. Molly is a black Lab/border collie mix. According to the staff, Molly is “the plain Jane black dog that everyone overlooks.” She’s been at the shelter longer than almost everyone and I couldn’t figure out why. I was at the shelter for a long time, too. I think it’s because people really aren’t that smart. Molly gets along with all the dogs at the shelter and is considered the “go-to dog” when you need a well-behaved example for newcomers.
We took Molly for a walk and found her to be a wonderful lady. She’s great on a leash and has a good sniffer. Molly found all kinds of stuff to eat, roll in, and play with on our short walk. What Molly really needs is some time to run free in the forest. She has tons of energy without being annoying and is obviously a smart cookie. Molly would make a great running or hiking partner. She loves to chew on sticks and play in the snow. She is about 2 years old, housebroken, and ready for a new home. I highly recommend her.
The Tahoe Vista shelter is small but the animals are treated with lots of love. It is obvious the staff cares about all the animals and takes good care of them. Many of the dogs are pit bull mixes, but we also saw a Chihuahua and a yellow Lab among others. Don’t get the wrong idea. These pit bulls, including Georgia the receptionist, are some of the best-behaved shelter dogs I have met.
The Tahoe Vista shelter needs more volunteers to help walk dogs, and don’t you need a little more exercise? The shelter has some outdoor space but these pooches would love to stretch their legs on a nice walk. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday the hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Stop by and meet Molly, Georgia, or one of their wonderful friends. Sign up to be a volunteer and make a dog’s day. For more info on the Tahoe Vista shelter, call (530) 546-4269.
