New President, Officers at Land Trust

Thomas Van Berkem was recently appointed board president of the Truckee Donner Land Trust. Van Berkem, who replaces past president Martin Bern, began his tenure at the Land Trust working to save the Waddle Ranch Preserve. "Tom is a seasoned manager, a brilliant strategic thinker, and a passionate conservationist. The Land Trust will be well served by having Tom at the helm,” said Perry Norris, the Land Trust’s executive director.

Van Berkem is a retired Wellpoint executive and has also worked as a labor mediator for the construction industry, a human resources manager for Whirlpool, and as an executive with several banks. He was elected to the Truckee Tahoe Airport District Board in 2008 and currently serves as vice president.

Janet Zipser Zipkin is the Land Trust’s new vice president, William Thauvette is treasurer, and Jeff Hamilton is secretary.

Fifth Biennial Science Conference

The 2010 Tahoe Basin Science Conference, held at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village, provides a forum for individuals involved in Lake Tahoe Basin science and management to learn about and discuss the latest relevant scientific findings and their significance. This year’s topic is “Measuring the Success of Ecosystem Restoration in the Lake Tahoe Basin.” The conference is hosted by the Tahoe Science Consortium and is open to the public. Ability Celebration at Alpine Meadows

Active-duty U.S. soldiers and marines will hit the slopes for ski and snowboard lessons during the Wounded Warrior Ability Camp at Disabled Sports USA Far West at Alpine Meadows. The camp was established in 2009 through a partnership between the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project and Disabled Sports USA Far West. Soldiers disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan will visit the camp from three major rehabilitation centers: Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System; the Naval Medical Center, San Diego; and the Naval Health Clinic, Hawaii at Pearl Harbor. 17th Annual Crab & Pasta Feed

Saturday March 20
The Truckee Noon Rotary Club's Annual Crab Feed takes place at the new Recreation and Parks Community Center in Truckee. The KidZone Museum will host a live auction and raffle and will receive 100 percent of the proceeds. The event kicks off with the bar opening at 5 p.m., a buffet dinner from 6 to 7 p.m., and a silent auction from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults/$20 for children. Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Seeks Volunteers
April 22 through 24
Serve your planet and your community by volunteering at Tahoe Truckee Earth Day at the Village at Squaw Valley. Volunteers are needed for the two-night film festival prior to Earth Day, and for the Saturday event itself. Help is needed setting up and tearing down, with the kids’ area, and at the zero waste stations. Volunteers get free lunch and discounted T-shirts.
