The description for Diego’s Umbrella reads “Mexi-Cali gypsy pirate polka.” I don’t even know how to describe it, but like a good fish taco, I just know it’s something I want. Flamenco? Yes. Latin, pop, and ska? Yes, yes, yes. Topping it off with homemade mariachi outfits? YES!! Give a listen to “Beastslayer of Valenar,” a raucous, organized tumble into crazy klezmer that gives way to an almost circus-like parade song. It’s a delight to the brain that really can somehow only be described as gypsy pirate polka. Called San Francisco’s ambassadors of gypsy rock, Vaughn Lindstrom (acoustic guitar, vocals, lead songwriter) teamed up with California native Tyson Maulhardt (electric guitar, vocals) to create a musical ensemble they dubbed Diego’s Umbrella. The namesake: their friend’s arm tattoo. Diego’s Umbrella debuted in 2001 with its first album, “Songs for the Farmers.” With the addition of Kevin Blair (bass), Jason Kleinberg (violin, vocals, accordion), Jake Wood (drums, percussion), and Ben Leon (lead vocals, electric guitar, percussion), Diego’s Umbrella has been packing venues throughout the Western U.S. and Europe with its heavy-hitting live shows and filling airwaves in the U.S. and Europe with lively tunes.Published: February 11, 2010
