If Curtis Mayfield was still alive today, he would probably be banging down Karl Denson’s door for a mind-blowing collaboration. Denson and his Tiny Universe are scheduled to hit the Crown Room at Crystal Bay Club and Casino Feb. 5 and 6 with the force of a thousand funks. Based out of sunny San Diego, KDTU is on tour promoting their latest effort, “Brother’s Keeper”, released in September of 2009. Published: January 25, 2010
The album features Meshell Ndegeocello, Marc Ford from the Black Crowes and musicians from Lenny Kravitz’s Band, The Dap Kings, The Greyboy Allstars and Switchfoot in an 11-track composition that does its damndest to defy definition. Blurring the lines between jazz, funk, jam rock and soul, Brother’s Keeper is a delight from start to finish. Good times abound with “Shake it Out” and terrific relevant lyricism highlights “The Drums of War.”
Denson is a master musician not to be missed. Lucky for all of us he’s gracing us for two nights, and two nights only. As a bonus the Pimps of Joytime will be playing the afterparty of the Saturday show. Info: Feb. 5 and 6, 9pm, tickets $25/Adv, $30/Door, Crystal Bay Club Casino, 14 State Rt 28, Crystal Bay, (775) 833-6333, crystalbayclubcasino.com
