Winter Camping Class

Do you love the outdoors but don’t know how to begin to camp in the wintertime? Come join Tahoe Rim Trail association guides on an overnight “Snow Camping 101” trip. These one-night excursions to the snowy backcountry overlooking Lake Tahoe will cover packing for snow travel, basic orientation skills, winter travel hazards, winter survival techniques, campsite selection and set-up, cooking hints and demonstrations, and principals of Leave No Trace. Sick and Twisted Freestyle Tour
Saturday Jan. 23
Tahoe’s only pro/am freestyle contest series returns with seven epic events on the winter schedule. Sick and Twisted contests are open to both skiers and snowboarders with the open class competing for cash and the amateur class competing for gear. The next event is a slopestyle contest on January 23 at Kirkwood Mountain Resort followed by a big air contest at Homewood Mountain Resort on February 20. Info: (530) 581-0553, snowbomb.com

Skiing-for-Schools Provides Discount Tickets
Sunday Jan. 24
The Excellence in Education Foundation is partnering with local ski resorts to offer discounted tickets to skiers and snowboarders throughout the season. Proceeds go directly to the foundation, which provides enhanced educational opportunities for local students. January 24, the foundation is offering discounted tickets to Boreal Mountain. The pre-purchased lift tickets are $25 per person. A limited quantity of tickets will be available the week prior on a first come, first serve basis at all Porters locations (Truckee, Tahoe City, Incline Village). Project Snow Seeks Volunteers
Jan. 24 and Feb. 7
Project Snow is a Tahoe/Reno-based program that helps encourage disadvantaged youth to be active through snowboarding. The program is seeking volunteers to help on snow days at Mt. Rose Ski Resort on January 24, February 7 and 21, March 7, and April 4 and 15. Youth participants are given all the necessary snowboard gear to keep so donations of new or lightly used boots, boards, bindings, and outerwear are also appreciated. Sugar Bowl Skicross and Terrain Park Contests
Feb. 1 to 3
Sugar Bowl Resort will play host to several exciting competitions come February. Two sanctioned U.S. Skiing FIS Nor-Am Cup skicross races start the competitive festivities February 1 to 3 with U.S. Skicross Team racer Daron Rahlves expected to race against skiers from around the world. The skicross comps will feature four-man heats racing head-to-head down a new course located on Mt. Judah’s Tunnel 41 trail. On February 13, Sugar Bowl will host the second “Working Man Wednesday” terrain park contest. The “Working Man” contest series is designed for local terrain park enthusiasts who work on weekends and is open to males and females of all ages. Info: (530) 426-6724, sugarbowl.com

Indoor Rock Climbing Contest Series

Saturday Feb. 13
High Altitude Fitness in Incline Village will be hosting the second contest of the Tahoe Triple Crown rock climbing series. The event is open to men and women of all ages and will stress sportsmanship and fun over competition. Participants will compete in divisions based on age and ability including youth (10 years and under) and masters (40 years and older). Great Ski Race Registration Now Open Online
Sunday March 7
The 34th annual Great Ski Race returns to North Tahoe on March 7. The 30-kilometer race starts in Tahoe City, finishes in Truckee, and continues to be one of the largest Nordic ski races west of the Mississippi, drawing more than 800 racers each year. All proceeds from the event help fund the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. Online registration is now open with a race fee of $45. Race day registration will also be available for $65. Entry fee includes a pre-race package and event T-shirt, plus refreshments, hot lunch, and live music at the finish. Info: thegreatskirace.com
