Squaw Valley and Alpine Receive Top Enviro Grades
Two Tahoe ski resorts scored in the top five of the Ski Area Citizens Environmental Report Card. Published by the Ski Area Citizens Coalition for the past 10 years, the report card evaluates the environmental policies and practices of 83 ski areas in the western U.S. based on a system of 35 criteria, which are then broken down into four categories: habitat protection, watershed protection, climate change, and environmental policies and practices.
At 89 percent, Squaw Valley received the highest score, beating Aspen Mountain, which is known for its progressive environmental policies. Alpine Meadows came in fifth place with a grade of 82 percent. The worst scoring resort was Breckenridge, followed by Copper Mountain and White Pass.
To view each resort’s score and to see resort performance in each of the four categories, visit skiareacitizens.com. Skiers and snowboarders can easily send emails to resorts through the website, thanking or criticizing them for their environmental policies.

The museum will stretch from Cisco Grove to below Rainbow Bridge on Old 40. Signs will include a map of the route, the spot’s history, old photographs, a nearby recreational activity, GPS coordinates for geo-caching, and the name of the business that adopted the sign.
