Library Decision Delayed
Published: January 16, 2010by Beth Ingalls
In Moonshine Ink’s November issue ("Reading Between the Lines"), we reported about the Nevada County Board of Supervisors’ October 13 decision to solicit proposals for outside management services for the county library system, which includes the Truckee Library. The board was looking at potential solutions to address what is expected to become a $400,000 shortfall for the system by 2011, according to County CEO Rick Haffey, even with “optimistic expenditure and revenue projections,” he said.
As expected, on November 19, a proposal from LSSI (Library Systems & Services) was received. The Maryland-based company’s 60-page document lays out a strategy that it says will “increase the libraries’ hours of operation by more than 14 percent, reduce the operating budget by nearly 7 percent annually, and increase the materials spending budget.”
A proposal was also received from the Nevada County Friends of the Library for operating only the Doris Foley Historical Library in Nevada City.
In response to questions and concerns from the public about the possibility of losing control of the valued library system, the board of supervisors has delayed any decision for now and appointed three committees, including a Library Management Model Ad Hoc group made up of elected officials, including Truckee Vice Mayor Richard Anderson.
The committees will review the proposals, consider other viable alternatives, and make a recommendation to CEO Haffey by January 25.
