Problems at Speedboat Beach

I was thankful for your article about Speedboat Beach in the most recent edition of Moonshine Ink.  I felt that your story exposed the issues that come with such a beautiful beach that is relatively isolated and located in a neighborhood, but close to tourist destinations.  Although I do not believe this beach should become private, I do believe many of the issues could be resolved with a regular/consistent patrol. On Father’s Day, we took our family to Speedboat early in the morning. The water was beautiful, the beach was beautiful, and we thought we were going to spend the entire day there with our two young sons. Unfortunately, by noon the beach had become full of young adults openly drinking out of cases of beer and dogs running all over the beach. At one point we counted eight dogs on this small beach. The scene had quickly changed from a peaceful place to a place we did not feel comfortable with our children. We chalked it up to a Sunday “holiday.”

The next day I returned with my kids and their grandmother, only to find the same scene. We stayed for only a short time. As we were leaving, I was relieved to see a California Highway Patrol driving down the street headed towards the beach. I stopped him and asked if he was headed there as I was concerned about the dogs (mainly the waste so close to the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe). He simply looked at me and told me that this was considered a “locals” beach and that no one really minded if dogs ran freely around. It was shocking to hear a law enforcement agent make this statement. Upon entrance to the beach, there are two or three areas where the signage clearly states “No Dogs.”  If the law enforcement who is charged with upholding “local” rules and regulations feels they can individually deem what is valid and what is not, how do they expect anyone else to uphold other regulations?  Either have regulations or don’t, but to openly tell me that this is a “locals” beach and I shouldn’t be bothered with open disregard for the law was shocking. I have to say, this “local” wants to keep Tahoe beaches safe and clean so that everyone can enjoy them, now and in the future. It’d be nice if the “local” law enforcement agency felt the same.

1. A local's beach
Speedboat is my favorite beach, and I love it because you are able to enjoy the beach without all the tourist. Dogs are not allowed on so many beaches in Tahoe, but people down at Speedboat never seem to mind, because it is one place we can go and just enjoy our local beach. People should be able to go down there and be able to enjoy some fun in the sun with their case of beer. There are plenty of beaches in Tahoe where you can go for a more family friendly atmosphere. The past few years, it has become a popular spots for the younger crowd. I for one hope we keep it that way. The police shouldnt have to get involved. The policeman was right when he eluded to let the locals do what they want. I would rather them be out doing their job- than going down to the beach to look for dogs. It should be a leash friendly beach!!!! I have never seen it out of hand or have I been in fear of the dogs, but I do hear complaints everyday I am down there about the locals not being able to enjoy the day with their dogs down on the beach!

2. More beach experiences ruined
Chimney beach used to be great but now you walk through a minefield of dog shit baking in the sun to get there. Last time I was there, some lady let her dog crap about two feet from the water where she pushed the pooh nearer to a rock on the shore and covered it up. Not one person with a dog (and there were zillions of them) had plastic bags that I could observe. How nice to go to the beach and roll around in dog shit left from self centered people who could care less. How bout some more bacteria in our nice, clean water? Not clean anymore. Plus the kids that pulled up in their speedboat and turned on their music, destroying the calm, prevented us from even being able to read. God, people are rude.

3. Visitor
I visit the Tahoe area regularly (live in the bay area), and the I agree that the laws should be upheld. I have a dog that has been visiting Tahoe with me for the last 13 years. When we visit, the dog is ONLY taken to areas where dogs are allowed and I always pick up after her. Regardless of age/drinking preferences, the Tahoe area is a treasure to be PROTECTED, NOT EXPLOITED. Even if 'locals' cannot agree on the propoer use of their public lands, people like myself will continue to be active in other ways i.e. voting and offering financial contributions to organizations with like minded goals.

4. Tahoe Rights Is The Problem at Speedboat Beach
As a resident of the neighborhood, Speedboat Beach has become a BIG problem - between law enforcement officers that look the other way to "locals" like Tahoe Rights that thinks He (she) is above the law by allowing his - her dog on the beach, which is strictly prohibited. Let's remind everyone that there is a lease law in Placer County, too. So why do you think you are above the law and that others don't really mind your insensitive and illegal behavior. Next point - it is illegal to have alcohol on the beach and since you want to ignore that law by toting your case of beer to the beach - you probably are loud and obnoxious after having a few. You "locals" could do all of us neighbors and the "real locals" in this neighborhood a favor - come by every morning and pick up all of the discarded cans, bottles, trash, dirty diapers, cigarette butts, and oh yes, dog poop - that you all leave behind! Another favor - park your car up at the Cal Neva and walk down to the beach - our neighborhood cannot handle the influx of all you locals' cars - which by the way are parked everywhere - to the point that emergency vehicles cannot get through! And oh by the way - get a watch or better yet learn how to tell time - the beach is closed at 10:00 p.m. but all you locals like to party until the wee hours of the morning - not giving a "crap" about the other locals! Time for people like you to move on - we don't need locals like you! No respect for California laws and no courtesy to others. You're wrong - we locals do mind!!
