Thank You, Someone!
A few weeks ago, I drove up Donner Pass Road to the summit to climb with my husband. On the drive up, I was horrified as we passed over 10 different rocks with graffiti on them. Yikes! I was so saddened that someone thought their ugly robot stencil was more beautiful than the incredible rock that we are blessed to live around. This weekend, I drove up again, just waiting to see this disease of society and was surprised to see it was gone. Some saint had sand-blasted the uninventive robot off each site, leaving the rock a bit roughed-up but back to a more natural state. I’m not sure who did it, but I just wanted to say thank you to whoever took the initiative to keeping our town looking more like a mountain town than a graffiti-ridden city.
P.S.: To the robot-spraying dudes: Go get a canvas!

Riverside Studios Makes It To Downtown
Riverside Studios would like to thank our local community for all of your support over the past seven and a half years. And we would like to announce that with your support we have finally made it to Commercial Row in downtown Truckee!
Our new space sits right next to the Squeeze In and we are gearing up to open June 17. We couldn’t be happier to announce our move and are sure you will love our new space. We secured ourselves a piece of Truckee’s historic real estate and have transformed it into a beautiful gallery.

We have added to our team with this move and are excited to introduce three new artists. From our humble beginnings on Riverside Drive to our new digs on Commercial Row you have been our steadfast friends and followers.
Please help us celebrate this historic move by joining us for a grand opening event June 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be music, refreshments, and as always, a fresh perspective on art. Riverside Studios is now located at 10060 Donner Pass Road, (530) 587-3789.

Memorial Day Thanks
The Truckee Cemetery District board and its staff wish to express our deepest appreciation to the following members of our community for helping us to make our Memorial Day Services a resounding success: the Cadet Honor Guard of the Civil Air Patrol, 1st Lt. Deputy Commander for Cadets Charlie White, Lt. Colonel Robert Todd, Rachel Nadell and the Truckee-Tahoe High School Music Department, Pastor Wayne Hoag of Sierra Bible Church, Nevada County 5th District Supervisor Ted Owens, Town of Truckee Mayor Carolyn Wallace Dee, the Mountain Belles, Greg Beardsley and Alpine Lawn Care, Joe Murray and Truckee-Tahoe Mortuary.

A sincere thank you goes especially to all of our veterans and their families who came out to give respect to one another and to receive the recognition they so deeply deserve.

The Death of Downtown
Tasteless, odorless, and colorless are words that immediately came to mind upon my recent venture to downtown Truckee. There is a certain irony in a town that encourages one to “shop locally” when every third or fourth store has gone out of business; and if not yet, those that remain open have exceedingly limited hours of operation. Does anyone ever make a purchase in these stores?

I asked myself what makes this such a depressing experience, wondering why we don’t flourish like our sister cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City? I wondered why there are no empty storefronts in either of these towns? Perhaps it is their use of vibrant colors, stores of interest, and galleries that stretch beyond the limits of wooden bears and drab oil paintings of Truckee. Maybe it’s the interesting art that they are permitted to utilize in their roundabouts? Both towns, like Truckee, boast historical significance, yet their progressive thinking is what makes them thrive.

Instinctively I asked myself who are the responsible parties that have left our downtown to die? Could it be the greedy landlords asking astronomical rent, the parking fees, or perhaps something way more pervasive and sinister? This is our town. Could someone please wake up?

It is sad, and no one seems to mind. Downtown Truckee, close a few more doors and it’s downtown Bodie.

Downtown Merchants Dedicated to Truckee
(In response to “Death of Downtown,” by Ron Haimowitz, above)
My name is Donna Wood; my husband and I own the White Buffalo. I am a board member and chair of the Marketing and Promotions Committee for the Truckee Downtown Merchant Association.

Our historic downtown is made up of local merchants who live here and donate time and resources to the community. Most of us support all local school and nonprofit fundraisers. We in Truckee are fortunate that our historic downtown has not been taken over by chain stores and is populated with unique and locally owned businesses.

The recession has been no less challenging for our downtown than for anyone else. This past month three new stores have opened in our historic downtown. The TDMA is working with landlords to fill empty spaces.

Even in these challenging times local merchants have donated countless hours to organize the Truckee Follies and now Truckee Thursdays, which starts June 17 and runs through Aug. 19. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. enjoy a kids zone, local artist vendors, a farmers market, beer garden, and live music.

Truckee is our town and we love it here! The downtown really belongs to the community and relies on the good people of Truckee to keep it a vibrant part of our small town.
