"Sierra Nevada Dance’s ballet interpretation of Beauty and The Beast delighted the hearts of many and provided the families an enchanting experience. Sherrie Peterson, Artistic Director of SND created this marvelous piece of storytelling using local talent from the Tahoe Truckee area. The production which was held at North Tahoe High School’s theater showcased community members ranging from children as young as four to adult. Some of the dancers were students of Sherrie’s with years of experience and others with no previous experience. Co-choreographer and former student, Leslie Lighthiser who also played the Sorceress helped tailor this ballet to display all the dancer’s strength as a coherent dramatic ensemble. The ballet’s structure is well balanced with a mixture of classical dancing and pantomime and includes a Prologue explaining the Prince’s transformation into the Beast. The backdrop set was simple with the enchanted forest and castle, yet the brilliant colors of the costumes enhanced the scenes of all the Acts. The adaptation was clear even to the young audience as the drama unfolded and easy for the audience as a whole to appreciate. Through the grace and beauty of the Fairies, Roses and the Sorceress, the onstage narrative is completed with excitement and energy through the Wolves and Beast fight scenes in the forest and the castle battle scenes with the Villagers. The audience is charmed by the young dancers of the Tea Cups, French Maids, Bluebirds and Blackbirds and are moved by the pas de deux of Belle and the Beast.
