There is a popular joke that begins “a priest and a rabbi walk into a bar.” The only difference in the joke’s ending and real life is that on Sunday, Feb. 28, the priest would keep walking and the rabbi would get on stage and tell everyone jokes. Enter Rabbi Bob Alper; an ordained rabbi who served congregations for 14 years and holds a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary. Called “the world’s only practicing clergyman doing stand-up comedy…intentionally,” Alper makes his Tahoe Vista debut in a program open to the entire community. (People brand Alper’s shows as “Gentile friendly.”)

All religious jokes aside, Alper is a blend between Bob Saget and Jerry Seinfeld, without the blue comedy. He has a way of taking everyday happenings and turning them into highly humorous anecdotes, often including members of his family.

A native of Providence, RI, Alper is a graduate of Lehigh University, was ordained at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and is the first Jewish person ever to earn a doctorate from the Princeton Theological Seminary. He has served congregations in Buffalo and Philadelphia, where he continues to conduct High Holiday services. He began his comedy career in 1986 when he entered the “Jewish Comic of the Year Contest” at the Going Bananas club in Philadelphia. Television, radio, and personal appearances followed as he quickly honed his approach to stand-up.

Get a good laugh starting at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28, North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation, 7000 Latone Boulevard, Tahoe Vista, tickets $15/Adv, $18/Door, kids over 11 please, (530) 546-2559, (530) 546-0895
