Truckee Public Servant Dies
Pat Sutton, 79, a longtime public servant and Truckee resident since 1963, passed away Jan. 31. Sutton was a well-known member of the Truckee Donner Public Utility District Board of Directors, serving in an elected capacity there for 30 years. She was also a Nevada County supervisor for one term, a member of the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, and served on the Local Agency Formation Commission. In addition, Sutton was active in the Truckee community in a multitude of capacities over the years. Moonshine Ink editor and former Truckee mayor Beth Ingalls worked with Sutton on the nascent Citizen’s Waste Management Committee at the Town of Truckee beginning in 1999. “I always had a fondness for Pat and the wisdom and experience she brought to the recycling committee,” says Ingalls. “We didn’t always agree on things, but I greatly respected her service and will never forget her contributions to this community. Her level of commitment was absolutely astounding.”

Memorial contributions can be made to the Pat Sutton Memorial Scholarship for Public Service, in care of Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation. Donations to Meals on Wheels and/or Tahoe Forest Hospice, which helped Sutton and her family in her final days, would also be greatly appreciated.

Owens Drops Bid for Assessor
Last month, Nevada County District 5 Supervisor Ted Owens pulled out of the June race for Nevada County Assessor and threw his support behind candidate Jim Blashford, a Lake of the Pines resident and managing appraiser for Placer County. In November, Owens had announced his intention to run for the seat just a week after the sitting assessor, Dale Flippin, said he would retire. The race is now between former Nevada County Supervisor Sue Horne, Blashford, and Rolf Kleinhans, a real estate appraiser and financial consultant.

Nevada County Races Heat Up

Candidates wishing to run for any of the offices up for grabs in the June 8 election must file papers by March 12 with the Nevada County Office of Elections. That deadline will be extended until March 17 if any incumbents for a particular office choose not to run. Candidates for the following offices have already filed or expressed their intention to file: Nevada County Superior Court judge: appointed incumbent Candace Heidelberger; Nevada County Clerk/Recorder: appointed incumbent Gregory Diaz and attorney Barry Pruett; Nevada County Supervisor: Fourth District incumbent Hank Weston and Third District incumbent John Spencer; Nevada County Auditor: incumbent Marcia Salter; Nevada County Treasurer/Tax Collector: County Executive Analyst Tina Vernon, businessman Bill Steele, and County Probation Office Fiscal Manager Darlene Woo; Nevada County Sheriff: incumbent Keith Royal.

Adopt a Hydrant
The Truckee Fire Protection District wishes to remind residents that fire hydrants can become buried in the winter months and urges citizens to help by adopting a hydrant in their neighborhood. Helping keep hydrants clear of snow and letting the department know when snow stakes marking hydrants are missing or broken helps to ensure that the department can respond quickly in the event of an emergency. The Nevada City–based Sierra Fund is pleased to welcome their newest staff member, Science Director Carrie Monohan, Ph.D.  “Dr. Monohan has an excellent reputation for both her scientific expertise and clarity of communication to the community audience,” said Elizabeth “Izzy” Martin, Sierra Fund CEO. “In previous years, she has served as a consultant to our Mining Initiative, including major contributions to our “Mining’s Toxic Legacy” report, and has earned the respect of academic and scientific peers.” The Sierra Fund was established in 2001 as the only community foundation dedicated exclusively to saving the Sierra Nevada.
