The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency unanimously approved the Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project on Jan. 27 after five hours of public testimony, years of input from citizens and community groups, and heated discussion within the community.

Simply stated, the nearly $50 million project will reduce the one-mile stretch of State Route 28 through Kings Beach from four lanes to three and add crosswalks and roundabouts.

Those opposed to it argued that the improvements would actually worsen traffic, inhibit emergency vehicles, and make driving and walking less safe. Proponents believe that the addition of roundabouts and reduction of vehicular travel lanes would help slow traffic, make the town friendlier to pedestrians, bicyclists, and shoppers, and have the added benefit of improving water quality.

At the same TRPA meeting, the Governing Board also approved a project by DOMUS Development that will bring 77 affordable housing units to the community.

Construction timelines for both projects are still undetermined.
