NTPUD Crews Detect Frozen and Broken Water Service Lines
On December 18, North Tahoe Public Utility District Water Treatment Plant technicians reported a 20 percent spike in water production, which indicated either a serious water main leak or numerous broken service lines to homes and businesses in the area.

Operations staff detected 55 suspected home service breaks in the first few hours and worked overtime into the night to detect the broken pipes and shut off water to prevent homes from flooding.

The district wishes to acknowledge and thank the dedicated Operations and Water Quality personnel for their proactive steps to prevent damage to homes.

The district recommends that all homeowners have a water shut-off valve installed to completely drain and shut off the water when they expect to be gone for any length of time. In addition, the heat to an unoccupied home should never be completely turned off to keep pipes from freezing, and cabinet doors should be left open to allow air to circulate to pipes.

New Ownership at Royal Gorge

Royal Gorge partner Kirk Syme has purchased Ice Lakes Lodge, the Summit Station, and related parcels from Royal Gorge LLC. Tom Mooers, executive director of Sierra Watch, said the sale is a reminder that “Royal Gorge's holdings on Donner Summit are composed of many parcels and could, over time, get carved up into multiple subdivisions … Hopefully, the shift in ownership will encourage people to come to the table and collaborate on permanent protection of the Summit.”  Info: sierrawatch.org.
