The Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation announced last month that it had reached its goal of getting more than 1,000 individuals and organizations to sign on to its Speak Your Peace Civility Project. Conducted over a six week period from October to December, the campaign sought to increase participation in public discourse by urging citizens and community leaders to communicate in a more respectful manner.
While TTCF Program Officer Phoebe Bell said it was fairly easy to get that many people to adopt the project, it was not without substantial effort.
“We did 30 presentations over the last couple months at all the public entities we could think of, and got as much press as we could,” Bell said.
Some of the public organizations that adopted resolutions to abide by the project’s nine rules of civility include the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, Tahoe City Public Utility District, Town of Truckee and Truckee Donner Public Utility District. Only one public body — the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District Board of Trustees — rejected such a resolution.
“Yes, we’re disappointed, but the more important piece is that the conversation happened,” said Bell, noting that the school district as a whole is embracing the project. “We talked to Special Ed and we’re going to Transportation, and Truckee High School shared it with each grade level.”
The foundation will be sending out an email in a few months to check in with Speak Your Peace signatories, both to serve as a reminder to abide by its rules and to get feedback about whether the individuals and organizations have noticed a change in the tone of public discourse.
